You can start this leisurely walk along the shores of Salzach river everywhere you want. Here are two possible starting points: 1) the train station and 2) the sports ground.
The promenades along the river Salzach are flat, the entire length is 25km. You can either walk towards Schwarzach or towards Bischofshofen.
Salzach river has its source near Krimml in Oberpinzgau and flows through Pinzgau, Pongau, Tennengau, through the city of Salzburg, the province of Upper Austria and along the Austrian/German border to Passau where it empties into the Danube.
In the summer the popular Tauernradweg Cycle Path runs also follows the shores of the Salzach from Krimml to Passau. The part of this cycle path that runs through Sankt Johann is called “Sagenhafter Tauernradweg”.
There are plenty of inns and restaurants along the way catering to the hungry and thirsty walker. Two good options are Hotel Brückenwirt and Reiners Wirtshaus but there are many other nice ones.
